ArtNetdlr presents BRIAN BOURKE, one of the most prolific Irish artists working today, to discuss his extraordinary ideas and creative processes.

Dublin born artist Brian Bourke studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and St. Martin’s School of Art, London. He represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1965, claimed first prize in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art competition in 1967, and received the O’Malley Award from the Irish-American Cultural Institute in 1993. Bourke is well known for his very distinctive portraits and self portraits which combine strong colours and often caricature-like distortion. His early landscapes and life-size nude self-portraits in various series shows his interest in observational work and fictional narrative. Bourke’s work informed by classical art and literature and artist’s own Dublin background, adding a wild, urban energy to all his work.

His works are in many important collections and galleries throughout Europe.

He is an elected a member of Aosdána and an Honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.

ArtNetdlr will host the Arts Night, featuring an exciting mix of live music and spoken word, to celebrate all of our valued members, all of the participating artists in our network, all that creative spirit that makes Dun Laoghaire so unique.

 

The Arts Night will be an opportunity for ArtNetdlr members and local community – people with an interest in all aspects of the arts, including literature, poetry, painting, sculpture, drama & film, photography, ceramics – to meet one another, to make new connections and share good conversations.

 

The artists taking part in this event include musicians Ronan Murray, Justyna Kosmulska and Eleanor Dawson. Poets Alison Hackett, Cathy Dillon, Triona McMorrow and Phil Lynch will read and discuss their latest work.

Following our hugely successful Hinterland collaborative project / exhibition last May, the Hinterland committee will join forces again to present it’s success. We are proud to launch a new feature on ArtNetdlr website – Online Gallery – where Hinterland exhibition continues. The next ArtNetdlr Biennale Collaborative Exhibition will be held in 2021. This year four exhibitions will be curated online leading to a grand exhibition opening in the area next summer.

All are welcome to join the celebration and show your support for invaluable work of ArtNetdlr in breathing cultural life into Dun Laoghaire – Rathdown burrough.

ArtNetdlr is proud to present a lecture by one of Ireland’s leading contemporary landscape painters Donald Teskey, who will discuss his large-scale landscape paintings which offer powerful images that bound with energy and force of nature.

Donald Teskey was born in Co. Limerick and graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in1978.
He came to prominence as an artist through his skill as a draughtsman during the 1980s with several significant solo exhibitions. Since 1992 he has crafted out a substantial body of work as a painter of the landscape focusing on the ruggedness of the western seaboard. Sometimes working on a very large scale, his images reflect his response to the formal elements of composition; shape, form and fall of light. The result are powerful images of instantly recognisable parts of the Irish landscape with large abstract passages and surfaces which articulate the relentless, energetic and elemental force of nature.

He is the recipient of awards from EV+A, the Claremorris Open Exhibition, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Ulster Academy.

Awarded a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Centre, USA in 2002.

Artist in residence for 2 months at the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation, Connecticut in 2007

Awarded a 3 month residency in Paris at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in 2012.

The Print Club of New York’s Presentation Print Artist for 2015

Artist in residence at Swarthmore College PA funded by the William J. Cooper Foundation in 2017

Teskey’s work has been exhibited in the UK, USA, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland and South Africa.Collections include the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Arts Council of Ireland, corporate and private collections worldwide.

He is a member of Aosdana (The Arts Council established Aosdána in 1981 to honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland, and to encourage and assist members in devoting their energies fully to their art)

Meet the Artists | Hinterland Coffee Dock

ArtNetdlr invite the public to meet the artists for an insightful walk-through of the HINTERLAND project / exhibition, followed by coffee and chats.

See interdisciplinary creative interpretations by the local artists what Dun Laoghaire – Rathdown area means to them, see how it shapes our own inner hinterlands.

Join Shabnam Vasisht, Miriam Sweeney, Elizabeth Shaw, Erika Tyner, Iris O’Connor, Gaby Browett, Alison Hackett, Dylan Ryan and Eliot Smith who will guide you through their work and talk about their own creative collaborative process.

Hinterland is open to general public 11am – 6pm daily with late night opening on Thursday 16 May. Exhibition closes on Saturday 18 May.

The Coffee Dock takes place on the second Tuesday of every month in the dlr LexIcon. Informal networking sessions take place around a designated theme and each member has two minutes to discuss a topic without interruption, followed by a general discussion.

Printing Workshop by Aoife Dwyer & Ann Kavanagh

This hands-on printing workshop with artists Aoife Dwyer & Ann Kavanagh will introduce a non acid painterly printing techniques and tools, encouraging participants to experiment and develop their own individual projects. Ten students only, so personal guidance and supportive environment will be offered to develop the skills and experience of printing art making.

Ann Kavanagh visual artist originally from Kilkenny, now living in Dublin. She graduated as a mature student from Dun Laoghaire IADT in 2004 receiving an honours degree in Fine Art.
Ann works across the mediums of photography and printmaking and is a member of the Black Church Print Studio since 2004. Ann has also work at other print studios over the last 10 years namely Crown Point Press, San Francisco, Druckstella Printmaking Studio, Berlin and Mi-Lab at Lake Kawaguchi Japan, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Aoife Dwyer works with photography, screenprint and etching. She is interested in drawing attention to everyday domestic objects, unintended marks, spaces and surfaces. Aoife studied screenprint under the tutelage of Terence Gravett at the Brighton Polytechnic College of Art. In 1998 she graduated from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin, with a BA honours degree in Fine Art. She became a member of the Black Church Studio that same year and subsequently became a Director of the Board in 2005. Since 1998 she has been a tutor in fine art at the City of Dublin Education and Training Board. From 2005 to 2009 she has worked with DLRCo.Co

Solo exhibitions include ‘Wild’, National Concert Hall, Dublin (2004) and ‘Link to the Future’, Aer Rianta Arts Festival (1999). She exhibited in Kilkenny in a two person show titled ‘Found Drawings, Kozo Gallery, Thomastown (2007). She has also participated in many group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including An tOireachtas; RHA Annual Exhibition, RUA annual exhibition, Eigse, Carlow; Iontas Sligo; and more recently ‘Pressed’ curated by the Graphic Studio Dublin, County Hall Dun Laoghaire (2013); dlr Open Submission Exhibition, County Hall Dun Laoghaire (2013); ‘Draw the Line’ in the Monster Truck Gallery, Dublin (2011) and ‘Inhabit’ Draoicht, Blanchardstown (2008). In 2014 she was invited to show at the 184th annual RHA exhibition.

Dwyer completed residencies at Cill Rialiag Arts Centre, in 2010 and 2014. She is a recipient of DLRCC professional development grant 2011. Her work is included in public and private collections including the Office of Public Works, RTE, Guinness, Dun Laoghaire county collection and Dublin Bus. More about Aoife Dwyer

 

Turkish Iznik Design Workshop (advanced) by IDA MITRANI

Introduction to botanical representation in Turkish Iznik design.

This workshop consists in creating an individual artwork using the vegetal motifs and patterns found in Turkish traditional art and design. So participants will be looking at geometry, composition and prepare a colour chart according to the colours used in Iznik design.

Iznik, a town in northwestern Turkey, was the main center for the production of ceramic tiles and tableware in the Ottoman empire. These ceramics were highly valued luxury objects and have come to represent Ottoman visual culture at its height.

IDA MITRANI is a Turkish born French artist living in Dublin. Her artwork is about the accuracy and idealisation of chosen specimens. Inspired by memories, the concept of cultural identity and distorted experiences, Mitrani creates scenes with motifs referring to the Botanical world, Nano world, anatomy and microbiology which blends reality and absurdity.

Along with her artistic practice, Mitrani has been intensively teaching Art and Botanical Illustration over the past 12 years and in various colleges, museums and art centres. She has set up the first intensive Botanical course in Ireland in the Institute of Art and Design and Technology in DunLaoghaire, Dublin. Ida is a member of the Irish Society of Botanical Artists. She exhibits widely.

Join artist MARTIN GALE for a discussion of his attachment to Irish landscape, stories and characters of rural countryside, and technical decisions, freedom and ideas that led and developed his artistic life, and summed up experiences of generations of Irish people in his paintings.

Seamus Heaney has written of Martin Gale’s paintings, they silence us, “they invite us to look twice, then to stand still looking until we begin to wonder if there is such a thing as innocent bystanding. They hold in a single, steady, local focus the reality and anxiety of the time”.

Born in Worcester, Martin Gale moved to Ireland at a young age and studied painting and drawing at the National College of Art & Design. In 1982 Gale was elected a member of Aosdána and in 1996 was made a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was a Board member of the National Gallery. He represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1980 and his paintings have been included in several major surveys of contemporary and 20th century Irish art. A large-scale retrospective of his work travelled from the Royal Hibernian Academy to the Ulster Museum in 2004-05. In 2013 Gale was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from NUI Maynooth and he was the recipient of the RHA Award for a Senior Artist at the 184th Annual Exhibition.

Gale’s work is held in numerous private collections in Ireland and abroad and represented in major public collections including The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, AIB, Bank of Ireland, OPW / State Art Collection, ESB, Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Chester Beatty Library, and Crawford Art Gallery, Cork. He lives and works in Co. Kildare.
