“The title of our exhibition Don’t Fence me In accurately describes my creative energy and the nature of my painting practice. Taking my inspiration from the natural world allowed for an exhaustive colour palette and range of texture and form for this body of work.

While I hold a lot of contrasting ideas in my head, I try to resist imposing my will to determine the outcome. Maintaining a fluidity and lightness of touch often allows the image to emerge organically.”

“Don’t Fence Me In includes work that has allowed me the freedom to express an emotional response to the world in all its’ complexity. My work takes its lead from the representational landscape image and explores the space between it and the abstract. I allow the paint to dictate the direction in the creative process, with a focus on experimenting with colour, mood and various methods of applying the paint.

Influenced by the abstract expressionist work of the 40s and 50s, my intention is to create an impact which furthers the viewer’s curiosity.”
