ArtNetdlr presents Abigail O’Brien PRHA, contemporary Irish artist and the first female president of the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Abigail O’Brien’s work employs many media including Photography, Sculpture, Video, Sound and Hand-Made Embroidered objects.

O’Brien’s work explores themes such as ritual, rites of passage and the domestic realm. She has just completed her treatise on The Cardinal Virtues. These are Fortitude, 2005, Temperance, 2009, Prudence, 2017 and Justice, 2021.

O’Brien’s work is in Private and Public collections including, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, The Caldic Collection, Rotterdam, The Museum of Modern Art, Vienna, The Gemeentmuseum, The Netherlands and Centro National des Artes, Mexico.

Born in 1957, she received her MA Fine Art Painting from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1998. She was conferred an Honorary doctorate Ph.D. in Fine Arts by the National University of Ireland in October 2019.

O’Brien was voted to the five-year post of President of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin on October 2018, the first female president of the RHA in 200 years. Abigail O‘Brien is a Member of the Boards of the National Gallery of Ireland and The Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda.

Abigail O’Brien lives and works in Ireland.
