OCTOBER 14 - Scéal Eile - Storytelling and Poetry Day

With its moody seascapes and history of seafaring, Dun Laoghaire offers plenty of inspiration for writers and performers.

On Saturday 14 October, poet Katie Donovan and storyteller Jean Ryan will lead a day of exploration, in a guided walk along the seafront, and afterwards, in lively workshops at Walter’s pub.

Meeting at 10 am at DLR Lexicon, the morning will consist of walking, story-telling and poem-sharing with Jean and Katie.
The afternoon will consist of two workshops, one with Katie and one with Jean, for storytellers and writers to share work and feedback. You will be assigned to one of the afternoon workshops. These will take place in Walter’s.
The day will end at 5pm.

Numbers are limited to 20 participants. Booking is essential. Bring a pen and paper, a waterproof coat, and wear your walking shoes.

This is a free event sponsored by a Creative Ireland Bursary from the dlr Arts Office.

Katie Donovan is an award-winning poet and long-time Dun Laoghaire resident. She ran a popular Creative Writing event, entitled Love Train, for ArtNetdlr in February which combined movement with writing and discussion. With fellow local poet Rosamund Taylor she led a poetry walkabout round Dun Laoghaire for last year’s Poetry Weekender Festival. Scéal Eile is a similar opportunity. Movement and engagement are the ideal way to spark ideas and enhance confidence.

Jean Ryan is a storyteller who is interested in her audiences responses to the stories she tells. For some people, certain ‘moments’ in a story can evoke a memory, or an experience from the past. Other listeners may resonate with a moment within the story and imagine it in the context of the narrative they have heard. Sometimes our imagination can take over and create a ‘moment’ that is tangential to the story. Regardless of the type of response, they are always authentic, sometimes surprising, and valued through sharing.

The morning session of poetry and story will be followed by a storytelling workshop. We will discover your ‘moments’ and explore them in a relaxed environment, all you need to bring along is your imagination.
