Artists Statement

Following on a career in Scenographic design for stage and screen, I am currently investigating the optical and perspective effects of the natural and man-made environment. From documenting samples of industrial graffiti in the city and suburban landscape; in particular the intervention on roads and pavements of utilitarian mark-making; industrial graffiti, to observing the mystical effect of mountains looming through mist or low cloud, to the simple perspective, “near big, faraway small”.

For my industrial graffiti series, I have chosen the square format of presentation and through applying oils or acrylics or more recently working with wool rug-art; I abstract the textures and layers of perceived depth underlying the found utilitarian graphic / calligraphic mark-making interventions.

Each piece of work has a studio label on the reverse with title and notation of the observed original location for the stimulus to initiate my process. The notation includes a set of Cartesian coordinates (latitude and longitude) by which the viewer can locate the observed original location, should they wish to do so, for further investigation.

In parallel with my Industrial Graffiti series, my imagination is taken by the mystical imagery of mountains in mist or low cloud and I endeavor to render this mystic phenomenon with oils on gesso prepared boards.
